Kotodama
by: Kagrra

This darkened night even the gods would sleep, I embrace the desire to face it alone
My only thoughts turn to destruction, with my body enshrouded in white clothes

Ushitora engravings beneath the storm clouds pierce through the sharpened light
I seize the sutra and as I do, bore a hole in your chest with reddened hands

Destiny now crosses over time, and my thrashing thoughts to the scorching flames
My forbidden love becomes dim with sighs, while my flowing tears turn to blood

My white clothes now dyed crimson red, your life still ephemerally floats down
You close your eyes to meet your last hour, and in that instant at least
May you forget everything for just this time, as you press yourself to me

Destiny now crosses over time, and my overflowing thoughs run on
And as your soul vanishes easily from this world, I hope you'll love me in the next one

I dunno about the lyrics I got this from; the Ushitora engravings seem a little odd. But oh well, I'm going to try explaining the music video now.

As you can tell, Kotodama is very buddhist. First off the band uses traditional elements, such as candles and tourou lanterns. Tourou lanterns are floated down the river with candles inside them to lead spirits to the spirit world, and candles are also associated with death rites. The band then carries this further with the tree hung with people parts. It is not uncommon in Japan for people to hang articles of clothing, etc. that they think the spirits of their loved ones will need on certain trees. I guess the twist here is that they're using the people, which is...odd, I guess. I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

That aside, they use Torii gates (red arches seen at shintou shrines) and take photos in a Japanese graveyard. The woodblocks are of demons, with the female one probably being a ghost (because ghosts don't usually have feet). My guess is that they are from the Meiji period or later, given the bright colors the artists used. Lastly, the woman standing under the waterfall in white clothing is undergoing ritual purification, and the doll is so complex that I don't think I can explain it too well, especially when its in the water.
