Onigokko
is a game Japanese children play that is very reminiscent
of "tag". The person who is "It" is
the "Oni" (demon) and the rest of the children
have to run from the oni. They call out taunts and whatnot,
and some of those appear in the lyrics of this song.
The
name itself, Hannya, is the name of one of a more popular
Japanese demon. This particular demon is said to have once
been a human woman who turned to a monster from her spite
and anger towards a past love. It reminds me of the English
saying "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned or Kaya",
and makes me think that there might be something universal
to this wisdom. The demon itself is visible in many aspects
of Japanese culture, from anime to Noh, and is a prominent
figure in their demonology.
