Did you ever stop to wonder just how much you see is reality, and how much is in your head?
I think it's more obvious among lolita, since you can see their escapism in their clothing (yes, making fun of people and refusing to be a responsible adult is escapism too), but when it comes down to it everybody runs away from something in their lives. Lolita don't want to grow up. Other people don't want to face their jobs or friends or relationships...and I think it's because they're scared. Growing up, accepting reality, those are all kind of frightening, aren't they (laughs).

And because I've been thinking about this a lot lately, I've been thinking about words a lot too. Not only because they're very important to me as a translator, but also because they're quite possibly the most meaningless things in the world sometimes. Yet at the same time the power they have over people and the emotions and images they can call forth in others are somehow very frightening. Awesome, if you will. Not the "wooah duude, awesome" kind of awesome, but the real awesome (hint: causing awe).

The truth is that reality is never going to be quite as you think it is when it involves other people. When someone says something it can be interpreted in so many different ways by those who read it, and especially on the net a simple, "I'm sorry" can be read by any number of people, who in turn can think it pertains to them and act in response, only to be misunderstood in turn by the person who originally made the apology. There's no way to know who it was directed towards and what it meant unless specified by the speaker...

Perhaps sometimes it's better not to ask then, right? Because it's possible that you could find out everything you've believed in has been nothing more than your own imagination. And that, that would hurt more than anything else I believe. The worst, I think, would be when it involves someone you love. There's always the risk that if you confess or confront them they'll look at you like you're some kind of malnourished prehistoric chihuahua and go "wazzat? What you talkin bout foo?! Who ARE you?!?!" So technically, two people could like each other and still never show it because they're afraid they're just crazy.

It all has to do with how you interpret the other person's words. I was thinking about that after reading the lyrics to "Pocketbell ga naranakute"

My pager won't ring, I'm waiting in vain
I can't be the one to call, I love you more than reality

I personally took it as saying that, rather than find out the person she loves doesn't love her, the singer would rather live in her fantasy world forever alone. Maybe other people will interpret it differently though.

That's all. If you're here at this site, you're probably wont to avoid reality a bit yourself. So just keep that in mind if you haven't already thought of it. I don't think it's possible to live in both reality and fantasy, so in the end I guess you have to chose or lose both....
